Flexible archiving solution delivered remotely
Scalable OmniFi-based approach meets audit and data-retention requirements
The challenge
Following a major corporate merger, Medtronic required an efficient and auditable way to retain and access historical transaction data from its legacy treasury platform while transitioning to a new system environment.
The firm needed to provide auditors with periodic access to seven years of historical data from its cash management and treasury operations modules. Because its merged IT and treasury teams had limited in-house expertise with the legacy system, Medtronic sought a partner able to design and implement a secure, flexible, and fully traceable archiving solution.
As a long-time user of SkySparc’s OmniFi for reporting and audit support, Medtronic saw clear advantages in an OmniFi-based archive capable of leveraging existing reporting workflows while providing self-service data access for auditors and internal users.
The solution
SkySparc proposed a database-driven archiving approach, applying its established four-stage methodology—pre-study, build and execution, validation, and go-live—tailored to Medtronic’s specific business and compliance requirements.
During the pre-study phase, SkySparc worked with Medtronic to identify the full scope of data and reports to be replicated from the legacy environment, validating large-volume requirements and producing a proof of concept.
In the build phase, Medtronic’s IT team prepared the target database infrastructure and installed the latest OmniFi version, which would serve as the interface for querying and extracting archived data. SkySparc then scripted and executed the extraction, transforming and loading historical transactions into the new database model.
To ensure complete accuracy, SkySparc conducted extensive validation and reconciliation testing in OmniFi, automatically comparing outputs from the archive with those from the live production environment. Discrepancies were flagged and resolved before hand-off.
The entire project was delivered remotely, with interactive workshops and regular online demonstrations replacing on-site visits. This agile, iterative process allowed Medtronic to test and approve successive solution iterations efficiently, maintaining full visibility and control throughout.
"We’re very pleased with the work done by the SkySparc team to create the archive for Medtronic, and I am happy to report testing of all the functions has been completed." – Todd Olson, Senior Treasury Program Manager, Treasury Systems & Special Projects, Medtronic
The result
Despite running in parallel with a large-scale system migration, the project was completed on time and under budget. The OmniFi-based archive now provides secure, user-friendly access to historical data—allowing Medtronic staff and auditors to retrieve information directly, without additional IT support.
The implementation covered millions of transactions and balances across thousands of portfolios and accounts, while maintaining data integrity and audit transparency.
Medtronic’s treasury and IT teams particularly valued the project’s low-touch delivery and comprehensive documentation, enabling them to operate the solution independently post-implementation.
Building on this success, Medtronic plans to extend OmniFi’s use to testing and quality assurance for future system upgrades, leveraging the same proven methodology to maintain data accuracy and process efficiency.
